Easy to learn and simple to use, the waterproof Garmin Oregon 400i features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and preloaded U.S. inland lake and navigable river maps that provide boaters and anglers with shoreline details, depth contours, boat ramps and mile markers for thousand of lakes. The chart detail includes shoreline, depth contours, navaids and port plans. It also offers a high-resolution, color 3-inch touchscreen that reacts as you tap or drag through menus and options. The Oregon 400i lets you customize five profiles–automotive, marine, recreation, fitness or geocaching–making the most beneficial features for each activity the easiest to access through quick shortcuts. The tough, 3-inch color touchscreen display is easy to read even in direct sunlight, and the Oregon’s easy-to-use interface means you’ll spend more time enjoying the outdoors and less time searching for information.
It also plays well with others, allowing for wireless exchange of tracks, waypoints and geocaches between other Oregon units and Garmin Colorado models.
This unit has a built-in electronic compass that provides bearing information even while you’re standing still, and its barometric altimeter tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. You can even use the altimeter to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.
Conveniently plug in optional preloaded microSD memory cards for all your outdoor activities on land or water. The card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you don’t have to worry about getting it wet. Just insert an optional Garmin MapSource card with detailed street maps, and the Oregon provides turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Add optional topographic maps to take advantage of the Oregon’s 3D map view which gives you a better perspective of your elevation. And with optional BlueChart g2 Vision maps, you’ll get everything you need for a great day on the water including depth contours, navaids and harbors.
Garmin’s HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. Geocaching is even easier with the Oregon, which quickly downloads online information for every cache, such as location, terrain, difficulty, hints and description, so that you don’t have to tote printouts with you.

Pre-Loaded Maps are Worthless,
Let me first start off by saying I love the Oregon series. But I returned my 400i to Amazon after less than a week. I ended up with the 400T and think it’s wonderful. The touchscreen interface is much easier to use than my previous eTrex Legend HCX and my 60CSX. Yes, battery life leaves much to be appreciated as the screen at full brightness and use of the compass absolutely kill the battery. But what ruined it for me were the pathetic preloaded maps of inland lakes. Simply put, the maps are awful. Very few lakes here in the New England area have data, and the few that do have incomplete areas of the lake … areas where most fishermen, like myself, tend to boat and kayak. Even Lake Cochituate in Natick, MA, a popular lake that has 3 large sections, only 1 of which Garmin decided to map, and that section has limited boating since it’s the beach area for swimmers.
I find it unprofessional for Garmin to release such a product which is obviously not ready for the serious outdoorsman. The 400i needs to be advertised with a listing of all the lakes that are actually mapped. It’s almost deceiving the way it’s presented. Now, the 400T has its issues as well … the topo basemap is only 100K, and there are no 24K maps for the Northeast, but that’s a whole other review.
If you plan on using this for the lakes in your area, do yourself a favor and call Garmin first and ask if those lakes are mapped. Even if it’s a big one that you’ve been going to since you were a kid, you might be surprised to find that Garmin has excluded it from the 400i.

Purchased this unit for use in a sailboat, gave the unit a try in the car first. In the sunlight with sunglasses this unit is impossible to see, sunglasses off is not much better. I would not be able to see this unit in a bright sailboat! Sent the unit back, will stick to a gray scale screen.
400i is Easy to use Great for Fisherman,
I bought this for my husband for Xmas and we have been using it right out of the box. I showed Lakes, ponds, rivers, and creeks. I’ve lived in South Carolina for 24 years and there were creeks and ponds I didn’t know about. My husband is a Bass Fisherman and he is going to use it for Tournaments. The only thing I would like Garmin to do is make it easier to register the Garmin. I had to download USB drivers and some other software to register and update the Garmin (it doesn’t come with a install disc, a registation card, and you can’t call Garmin to register only to ask questions). I bought this when Amazon had it for a low $354 (otherwise I probley wouldn’t have bought it) So I wait until the price goes down.

The 400T is for T terrain 400i I inland lakes. The details on the lakes are sketchy but its covering the whole US. So a lot of lakes won’t show the topo but living in MN i know it at least shows all the creeks ponds and lakes and has them named. But if you plan to troll the coast by using this unit as your guide. GOOD LUCK. I will say its tough extremely tough lithium batteries go for 2 days. and very simple to use. TOUCH SCREEN is a MUST
